Nikolai shuffled his way through the school slowly. It always seemed like when he came through here there was always some junior to pick on him. It always seemed as if they were the ones with the power around the place instead of seniors like him. Of course, the roof was the one place that he could be closest to the sky without having to be in one of the richer buildings downtown. Generally he couldn’t sneak into those places as it was and the school was actually pretty east to break into, especially if you had the practice. Even if he ran into anyone at this point he was pretty sure that he was just going to tell them to shove off. They’d just have to get over it because he wasn’t going to be stopped and he certainly wasn’t going to be told to go away.
There was more than one way out onto the roof but of course, Nikolai like to be complicated. His favorite way was the window, which led out onto the old fire escape. And this way it save him from having to break through another lock and climb up there. He stopped in front of it and looked down the hall he had just walked through. There wasn’t any one around to give him hell and a grin lifted the corners of his lips. Nicky unlocked the window’s latch before he pushed it open. Worse that would happen to him tonight was him getting locked out on the roof and honestly that wouldn’t be all that bad if it didn’t rain. But his luck was that it would rain if he got locked outside. A slight frown settled over his features but he shrugged and climbed out the window any way.
The roof sloped downward here and there was a shocking scene of greenery and hard ground below that would crush him no doubt if he fell. He wasn’t even sure that he would be able to grab onto anything on the way down to try to lessen the blow or stop it completely. Of course, if he fell he was sure as hell going to test it out because he had no desire falling all that way without it. His body was far too frail and he knew it all too well. A soft sigh slipped through his lips as he edged along the roof until he got to the spot that dropped down and then evened out enough where it could actually almost be considered flat.
Nikolai slid the few feet down the slope to the flattest part of the roof. He grinned broadly at himself before he slowly knelt down and then laid back. He stretched with his arms over head for a moment, giving a tiny moan as he did so before he released and relaxed his muscles. Nicky let out a content sigh and looked up at the sky. Stars. There was nothing better than laying up here at night and just drifting while you stared at the stars. And this was one of the few places in the entire city he’d be able to find that stars were visible. Usually you had to go further out but here you could catch a few here and there. It was pleasant and actually quite enjoyable.
Nicky shifted and dug around in his pockets for a moment before he produced a pack of cigarettes. The pack was crinkled and sort of smashed but the lighter and cigarette he pushed out of the empty pack were almost perfect. He placed the cigarette against his lips and quickly flicked his lighter to life. He inhaled as he held the flame to the tip, and smoke rolled out of his mouth as the end of the cigarette flared to the life. He shoved the lighter pack into the pack and then stuffed the pack back into his pocket, inhaling occasionally on the death at his lips.

YOU CAN'T DISGUISE A HEART WHILE IT'S BREAKING YOU HIDE BEHIND THE SMILE YOU'RE FAKING
• • • • • • • “Piper, you stupid bitch!”
Piper glanced over her shoulder at the angry trio of men that was chasing her along the high school property. She flicked her hazel gaze back to the building in front of her, the school that once housed her crazy antics, the thing that she dreaded going into everyday until she graduated was now the source of her salvation, if it was open. Piper slammed into the doors of the building, her long fingers gripping at the doors as she tried to rattle them open, only to hear the fate sealing lock clicking as she tugged. “Fuck me.” She exhaled sharply as she turned and ran out from the little cove that held the doors, looking for another way to get her ass out of the situation she currently found herself in. Her eyes frantically scanned the area for a way out or a hiding place, but no matter where she looked all she saw was more open area, something that she was coming to loathe, just as much as the boys behind her.
“You’re fucking dead, you hear me Piper?!”
Another baritone voice followed her as she sprinted across the desolate parking lot; there were only a few cars now, no doubt from the caretakers or a dedicated teacher that was probably huddled in the deepest part of the school, completely oblivious to the chase that was going on outside the school. This was not the first time that Piper found herself being chased by an angry mob and it probably would not be the last either, though it was safe to say that this was the most frightening. If she got caught she was defiantly screwed, these boys would probably kick her ass and then take anything that she had on her person just to add insult to injury. This whole mess wasn’t even particularly her fault, she was just supposed to have been picking up some weed at a party and then all of the sudden cops show, so everyone splits and the three behind her jumped to some conclusions. They figured Piper narked on their little drug set up, so because of all of the product they lost she should pay. Of course Piper knew that biting the hand that feeds her was never a good thing, which is why she would never nark on anyone, too bad they did not seem to believe her.
Piper was starting to panic now, there was no way she was going to be able to out run the three men for much longer, especially not in her current shoes, they were barely attached to her feet as it was. Her strides were starting to become jerky and with every increasing step she couldn’t seem to pull enough oxygen to quell the slow burning in her lungs. The echo of three sets of sneakers slapping against the pavement behind her was pounding in her ears, overtaking the sharp inhale of her breath and pounding of her heart, causing more adrenaline to pump through her blood. Making a sharp right Piper ducked into a little corner, hoping to be able to get out to a main crowded street but only coming across a ten foot tall metal gate and a dumpster. She gripped the gate, leaning against it for support as she prepared herself for what was to come. “Fucking shit!” she cursed through a sharp in hale of breath as she turned around and leaned against the gate, her eyes frantically darting around to see a way out of the dead end.
Finally after what seemed like ages she connected the dots, the dumpster was right under a fire escape, which lead to the roof. Without waiting any longer she pulled herself up onto the bin and then jumped for the ladder to the old fire escape, barely catching it with the edge of her finger tips as she struggled to pull herself up onto the landing. Grunting as she finally got onto the landing she couldn’t spare herself a break until she was completely out of site, so as fast as her body would let her she climbed the stairs onto the roof and out of sight of the three men. A few steps away from the edge she collapsed onto her knees as her eyes shut, her heavy breathing and pounding heart the only thing that she could hear as she wiped the sweat from her forehead. After a few moments of fulfilling the need of oxygen she opened her eyes only to have them land on a boy a few feet away, smoking a cancer stick. “Uhh.” She stated unintelligibly as she regarded the boy, waiting for him to do something, hoping that he would not have a loud voice if he chose to spoke; she only hoped that the trio had given up and gone home and was not in hearing range.

He was daydreaming about getting the hell out of this place. Not that it ever took too much for his mind to drift there. But he was ripped back to reality when he heard voices yelling. They didn’t sound all that pleased honestly but he was sort of used to that now, especially with the more he spent here in Vegas. It was bad enough that things with Lea had turned out how they had. He was scarred for life from that entire episode. But then it was like every time he turned the corner there was some new disaster happening and some new fight starting up. It was almost like he couldn’t escape it and just find peace though he sure as hell daydreamed about it enough.
He was about to lean over the edge of the roof and yell at the fuckers when it got quiet again. Nikolai frowned slightly at that. They either caught up to whoever they were after or had beaten the shit out of them or they had decided the chase wasn’t worth it. You’d be surprised how many times shit like that happened around here when he was just lying around. His shoulders went up in a shrug as he decided it wasn’t worth the thought and brain power honestly to try to figure out which one. So instead he just took another drag off of his cigarette.
The answer however was soon supplied to him when a girl joined him on the roof from the fire escape. His eyes went a bit wide that someone else was up here and then he took her in for a second, realizing she was horribly out of breathe. The people had lost her it seemed because she had disappeared onto the roof where he was making his almost weekly escape. He hadn’t seen her around here, meaning she wasn’t a student so she honestly shouldn’t have known an easy way to get up here. She had lucked out in finding one. The corners of his lips turned up in a smile and he chuckled softly. He was fairly entertained by her luck honestly and the fact she had managed to get away because the voices had been male and incredibly pissed off.
“Nice place for a good hide, huh?” Nikolai quirked one brow at her before chuckling softly again. He dug down into his pocket and pulled the pack of cigarettes out before sitting up and sliding them across the roof, closer to her. “Once you catch your breath you could probably use one.” He nodded his head once as if that was all there was too it and then he stared off the edge of the roof toward the bulk of the city, deciding that if she wanted to explain or even speak to him she could be the first to start it up. He didn’t want to press because to him there was nothing worse. He had been pressed time and again after the ordeal with Lea and he would never do it to someone else.
Nicky wrapped his arms loosely around his knees as he sat there, having pulled them up for more comfort. He took one last drag from the cigarette before throwing it off the edge of the roof and exhaling, smoke curling around his pale face. Though this was his place, at least in his mind, he wasn’t going to throw her back to the wolves. He was a nicer guy than that though many didn’t seem to think so any more.

YOU CAN'T DISGUISE A HEART WHILE IT'S BREAKING YOU HIDE BEHIND THE SMILE YOU'RE FAKING
• • • • • • • As Piper sat there trying to catch her breath she couldn’t help but continuously flick her gaze around, waiting for the trio to pop out and jump her. They were not the sharpest tools in the shed, but if they had seen her turn the corner into the small alcove, or if they had seen her ascend the fire escape then it would only be a matter of time before they hauled their asses up onto the roof. Then not only would she be screwed, but the kid in front of her would probably be screwed two, there was no way they were just going to let a witness walk unscathed. With that thought she started to panic all over, she started getting hot and her breathing quickened along with her pulse. Piper rubbed her face again, wiping off the thin sheen of sweat that had coated her forehead and nose before wiping her hands on her pants, trying to busy her shaking fingers.
Her gaze flicked up to the boy as he spoke, a small relieved smile pulled across her lips at his question, that probably should have been more of a statement. She figured not many people came up to the roof, but to find one kid here meant that he was probably up here a lot. Not trusting herself to speak yet she simply nodded, feeling her body relax as she dropped her shoulders and moved to sit cross legged. As the cigarettes slid towards her she felt herself reaching towards them, desperately needing something to calm herself. Piper was an occasional smoker, if she was drunk she’d hack a dart or two, or if she was really stressed she’d indulge, but she wasn’t a habitual smoker. “Thanks.” She said as she grasped the pack, her fingers shaking as she pulled one out and placed it between her lips before sliding the pack back. Digging into her pocket she pulled out her pink lighter and brought it the end of the cigarette, shakily lighting the dart before taking in a huge inhale, holding the smoke in her lungs before letting the smoke flow slowly from her mouth.
With her free hand Piper gently massaged the bridge of her nose, trying to push back the anxiety headache that was slowly starting to rear its ugly head; though the nicotine seemed to be pushing it back and helping her calm down completely. Piper took a long drag off the cigarette, watching the end of it burn before she slowly exhaled and tapped off the ash with a steady hand. Now that she had her breath back and was no longer shaking she decided it would be okay to finally speak and explain her sudden and erratic presence to the boy. “Yeah, so I’m Piper.” She stated before taking another pull off the cancer stick. “I was being chased by a trio of men who thought I narked on their little weed selling operation, so they basically wanted retribution of some sort. “she explained through an exhale of smoke. “If they caught me, probably would have beaten me up something fierce, taken all my shit and lord knows what else.” She elaborated, her voice steady despite the fact that her hand started to shake again as she brought the cigarette up, for one of the final pulls; suddenly wishing she had savored the stick for longer. “What about you? Who are you hiding from?” she asked, her gaze on the boy, trying to gauge his reaction.

Nikolai nodded his head at her as she said thanks. If there was one thing he knew, it was when someone needed a cigarette. Whether someone smoked or not, there was always that one time that it would be needed. And generally he felt like he was always the person around when it came down to it. Which he supposed was a good thing because he always seemed to have a pack on him no matter what. Nicky has a sense when he was going to run out and stocked up on more. He’d never last without them, though he was well aware it was a horrible addiction, so he knew better than to let himself run out of them. He had his dumb moments but when it came to his smokes…there was no such thing.
He couldn’t help that the edges of his lips pulled up in a smile as she introduced herself. He hadn’t been expecting that in the least bit considering what he assumed had been a chase scene had just happened. She had just supplied him with information he could use against her in the off chance that he needed to, not that he was that kind of person. But she didn’t know that. And he sure as hell wouldn’t have supplied his own name until he was sure had he just been in her shoes. But he liked that she had, no matter how stupid it seemed to him. Smaller things could get you killed out here, that was what he had learned in vegas.
“Pipper. That’s pretty sweet. I’m Nikolai.” He went to offer his hand to her before he hesitated and dropped it again. She looked too wound up to be worried about shaking someone’s hand so he figured they would get around to it later. He didn’t consider a meeting formal until there had been a handshake of some sort. But then again he was more old fashioned than most in his ways. Shit he wouldn’t even bang a girl unless he had been on a date with her first. Of course…he was a bit of a man whore these days as far as flirting and messing around with girls went. Still all of them would clearly state he hadn’t slept with them…because he hadn’t.
As she told him her story he nodded his head. He had figured it had been something along those lines. You weren’t chased down here unless you were suspected of doing something pretty shitty. Nicky wanted to chuckle at the story but he thought better of it and bit at his bottom lip to keep from doing so. But as she asked why he was up here and who he was hiding from he couldn’t help but laugh. He shook his head once to show that he wasn’t up here for the same reason that she was.
“I don’t hide from people. Well, not the ones that want to kick my ass.” He grinned broadly at her, not able to stop himself from doing so. “I suppose you could say that I’m hiding away from the world.” His shoulders went up in a small shrug though the smile never left his face. In all reality, that’s exactly what this spot was for him. It was his escape from the world and he didn’t mind sharing it for a little while but he couldn’t imagine it being a full time ordeal. It was his place for hiding, his place for thinking, and his place to be nonexistent for a while. “I like being a ghost to the world when I get the chance. I found the way up here freshman year and its been my stakeout ever since.” He gave a short chuckled before he shrugged again. “Other than that I’m just another loner I suppose. Afraid to face what the world has to throw at him. Sooo…nothing like your situation.”

YOU CAN'T DISGUISE A HEART WHILE IT'S BREAKING YOU HIDE BEHIND THE SMILE YOU'RE FAKING
• • • • • • • Piper was not much of a smoker, unless it came to pot, but the cigarette she was inhaling was like heaven in a stick. It was at these times that Piper could see how people could get so addicted to these devilish little cancer sticks, they were good and they had great soothing powers. Although she was still a little jittery from the chase, the nicotine in the cigarette was definitely doing its job by making her relax further. It was a wonder how much she was actually wound up until she felt her shoulders drop completely and the muscles in her lower back release, allowing her to sit more slack as opposed to the completely ridged up right poster she held previously. Rolling her shoulders back she allowed her free hand to rest behind her so that she could lean back slightly, all the while still slightly posed to run in case the trio got smart and figured out where she escaped to.
The girl acknowledge his greeting with a nod of her head, flicking her gaze away from the boy out to the skyline for a moment before turning it back to the dark haired boy in front of her. “Never met a Nikola.” She observed brushing her fingers on her free hand along the hem of her pants. “People must call you Nicky, or something eh?” she inquired, thinking out loud. To her that was one of the first steps of getting acquainted with someone, establish nick names. It was not so personal and it kinda gave the feel like you weren’t about to turn around and screw the person over for whatever twisted motivation one may have had. Piper raised an eyebrow as he seemed to hesitate in doing something, though what it was she wasn’t sure, but as soon as the thought came it went. Generally Piper chose not to dwell on things, didn’t do anyone any good if you asked her.
She took another drag off the cigarette, watching as the cherry lit up to a fierce red until it burned all the way to the filter. Piper held the smoke in as she crushed the cigarette on the roof, flicking the butt away as she slowly exhaled in a steady stream of white smoke, listening to the boy as he commented on her current situation and explained his. The brunette haired girl raised an eyebrow slightly as she received a large grin from the boy, it was slightly curious and it almost made her want to grin back; she founds grins to be very contagious. “Mhm, ghost to the world, I like that. Maybe I should give I a try sometimes, that is if you don’t mind me steeling you thing.” She joked lightly, a small smile making its way to her face. Sometimes she wished that she could just be a ghost to the world, as he so aptly described it. Though in Vegas, as she had come to learn over the years of growing up here, you were either a ghost or someone who everyone was always looking for. In her case most of the time she had someone looking for her, that’s what happened when you got involved in the wrong crowds, someone was always looking to get you; and that was not her being paranoid.
Piper nodded understandingly, the world was a scary place, especially Vegas and you threw yourself into a less than savory crowd. “I hear you bro, the world is intense and you should be lucky that you weren’t in my situation. Its motherfucking scary to have a couple men chasing you, then again you could be some black belt karate kid for all I know.” She thought out loud while shrugging her shoulders, a silly smile turning her pink lips up at the corners. “Then again, I don’t really suspect that I high school senior?” she paused, questioning if he was a senior. He certainly looked like it, but he could have also been a junior. “Would be hanging around the kinds of people that I know.” She resumed as she stretched her legs out. Comfortable that the dark haired boy was not about to jump up and shout that she was sitting up here, drawing the attention of the men if they were still around.
